Vizhinjam Coastal Police Station
Vizhinjam Coastal Police Station was opened on 01/06/2010 by the Hon&rsquoble Union minister of States for Home affairs Sri. Mullappalli Ramachandran in the presence of Sri. Kodiyeri Balakrishnan the then Hon&rsquoble minister for Home, Vigilance & Tourism of Government of Kerala. The land for constructing the Coastal police station was obtained freely from Harbor Engineering Department Vizhinjam , at Nomansland as Re-survey No.77/30, 77/31, 77/32, 77/36, 77/29, 77/42, 77/11 of Vizhinjam village. The station housed in a Government building comprised in building No.VII/1317 in Ward No. 20 of Vizhinjam Panchayath (now TC/62/C/214 of Thiruvananthapuram Corporation) Neyyattinkara Taluk, Thiruvananthapuram District, Vide Kerala Gazette (extra ordinary) GO (Rt). No.202/2011/Home Dtd.22/01/2011.
Vizhinjam Coastal Police Station has the area of jurisdiction extending from South Kollamcode to North Kaappil up to 12 Nautical Miles (Territorial waters) off the coast of Revenue district of Thiruvananthapuram which comes under Tvpm City and Rural police districts.

Vizhinjam Coastal police station has the jurisdiction in the sea up to 12 NM from the shore and this station comes under Kovalam Legislative constituency and Thiruvananthapuram parliament constituency. The nearest next coastal police stations are Neendakara coastal police station in Kollam district and Kulachal coastal police station in Kanyakumari district.
The basic objective of establishing Coastal Police Stations, in various Coastal States and Union Territories is to overcome the limitations of the state Police in terms of needed infrastructure and skilled manpower to exercise their policing jurisdiction effectively in the Territorial Waters (ie. upto 12 nautical miles from the shore).
Under the coastal security scheme, Government of India has allotted two 12 Ton Interceptor boats and one 5 Ton Interceptor boat which were collected from Goa Shipyard Limited to Vizhinjam Coastal Police Station. The interceptor boats are used for sea patrolling from South Kollancode to North Kaappil, the 12 Nautical mile area of the station jurisdiction. The patrolling party checks the suspected fishing vessels and the identity of the crews thoroughly and information are collecting from the fishermen regarding coastal security and suspected vessels and also about any illegal activities through the sea.
Coastal police station, Vizhinjam has its own Diesel pump which was inaugurated by State Police Chief Sri. Jacob Punnoos IPS on 17-08-2012, in the presence of Sri. T.J. Jose IPS, the then District police chief Thiruvananthapuram City and Sri. Putta Vimaladithya IPS, the then Deputy Commissioner of police Tvpm City. This pump has the capacity of 20,000 litres of LSHSD (Low Sulphur High Speed Diesel). Diesel from this pump is used in the two 12 Ton boats of this station.
